Rithere vs ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a whole AI workspace. Rithere is built for one thing: changing the text you highlight, right where it is. You'll probably want both.

In short

ChatGPT does far more than Rithere: files, images, voice, web search, memory, apps on every platform.1,2 But on Windows it can't reach into most apps and replace your text. Its add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets are the exceptions.3,2 Everywhere else, you copy text in and paste the answer back. Rithere removes that round trip.

Pick Rithere if you…

  • are tired of copy, switch, paste, copy, switch back, paste
  • paste text into ChatGPT with the same instruction again and again
  • want the answer to land where you were typing

Pick ChatGPT if you…

  • need long chats, research, files or images
  • want to choose the AI model
  • want your chats saved and on your phone

One rewrite, step by step

Same job in both: a reply in Outlook sounds too blunt.

Privacy

  • ChatGPT: on personal plans, OpenAI may train on your chats unless you turn it off in Data controls.11 Temporary chats aren't used for training.13
  • Rithere: only the text you highlight and your instruction are sent, to Google's Gemini AI on a paid plan. Rithere's servers don't store them; Google keeps them 55 days only to check for abuse and doesn't use them to improve its products. Your History stays on your PC.9

Our take

As an assistant, ChatGPT is in a different league; keep it. But count how often you paste text into it just to get a slightly better version back. That's the part Rithere does with one key, without leaving the app. It's free, so a day of trying it costs nothing.

For the technically curious
  • On Windows there's the new ChatGPT app (Chat, Work and Codex) and, if you had it, ChatGPT Classic.14 Classic opens a companion window with Alt + Space.15 The new app's global shortcut is Win + Alt + P.4
  • Appshots (both Alt keys) send ChatGPT an image and the text of the front window.6 Computer Use can type into apps, but on Windows it takes over the screen.16
  • "Work with Apps", which reads from other apps, is documented for macOS only.17
  • Rithere puts your copied text back on the clipboard after each run.18 Computer Use is only in ChatGPT Work and Codex, where available.16

FAQ

No. It runs on Google's Gemini through its own servers, so there's no OpenAI account or key to set up.7

Not officially, apart from its add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.3,2 Computer Use can type for you, but it takes over your mouse and keyboard while it works.16

At one thing: changing the text you highlighted, in place, in one keystroke. For nearly everything else ChatGPT does more, so we'd expect you to keep both.
